The Christmas Quilt

I always thought it would be fun to have a Christmas quilt, but just hadn't gotten around to making one. Well, last year I was in JoAnn's Fabric store and saw the perfect flannel fabric for a Christmas rag quilt. Since my mom's the quilt expert and needed an idea for me for Christmas, I made my request. It turned out beautifully and I could hardly wait to use it this season!

A couple of months ago I was reading a book that gave me an idea for a Christmas quilt tradition. It included a poem that I modified a bit and at the beginning of the month I shared the poem and the following thoughts with my family. . .

It’s finally here, the month of December.

It’s time to make memories we’ll long remember,

So mom and dad this very night

In the Christmas quilt will wrap up tight.

The next night will be Hannah’s turn;

The oldest child this spot does earn.

The third night the quilt on Ben’s bed will be,

And he’ll dream of gifts beneath the tree.

After Emma, the youngest, has felt Christmas wonder,

The cycle repeats, with more Christmas quilt slumber.

The Christmas quilt warmth will come to full flower

When the family all gathers for a Christmas Eve hour.

We’ll leave the quilt under the tree as a bed

So the sweet baby Jesus will have place for his head.

This Christmas quilt was a gift to me from an earthly angel, my mother. It represents all the wonderful feelings of the Christmas season, especially the Savior’s love for our family. Just like this quilt wrapped securely and comfortingly around our family, the Savior’s arms are wrapped loving around each of us as he watches over and cares for us. I know that He loves us and just as this quilt gives us warmth, the gospel of Jesus Christ will bring warmth into our hearts.
